Protecting Student Privacy

There are two types of student information:

  • Educational Records are protected by law and cannot be given out without the student’s written consent, unless an exception applies
  • UNM Directory Information can be given out without consent UNLESS the student has requested that the information be withheld.

Remember:

  • Always check for a Confidentiality Flag.
  • Even if a record is not protected by FERPA, you are not required to release it.
  • If you are not sure, contact the Office of the Registrar.
