Conclusion
Information in the wrong hands causes great harm. We have people on campus who are in the Witness Protection Program, individuals who have been stalked, and others with equally valid reasons for wanting to maintain strict privacy for their information. Violating the privacy rights of a UNM student or employee can put that person in serious danger and can expose you to criminal or civil liability. In addition, you could lose your job. Please treat everyone's information as if it were your own--help us keep private information PRIVATE!
Be polite, be firm, and promptly refer inquiries to the appropriate authority:
- For Staff: the Human Resources Department, and in legal matters, the Campus Police
- For Faculty: the Provost’s Office
- For Students: the Office of the Registrar, the Dean of Students Office or appropriate Branch office
Remember:
- Only release information if you have been authorized to do so by a data steward;
- If you do not know the data steward, redirect requestors to data.unm.edu, which you will also find in the Links for More Information sidebar.
