Protecting Student Privacy

Educational Records are protected, meaning that they are considered private information. Educational records are protected by law. The information that cannot be given out without the student’s written consent includes:

  • Transcripts
  • Grades
  • Exams
  • Financial records or Bursar statements
  • All student information that is not defined as FERPA Directory Information

Specifically defined, educational record refers to any document directly related to the student and maintained by UNM, in whatever form—including but not limited to notes made in the minutes from departmental meetings, graded papers, official and unofficial transcripts and correspondence, as well as information stored in various databases and displayed on computer terminals at offices around campus.

Unless otherwise noted, everything about our students is private. Therefore, everyone outside the University, including but not limited to parents, relatives, spouses, or domestic partners, must have written permission to view or obtain copies of student record materials.
