Defending UNM Systems from Malicious Software

Electronic and physical security go hand-in-hand. For example, even though you take We all have heard horror stories about computers being hacked. Malicious software (often called “malware”) can destroy data, steal data, and/or render your computer useless. Often the first sign of malware on a computer is that the computer becomes extremely sluggish when opening applications or websites. Examples of malicious software include:

  • Keyboard logger
  • Trojan horse
  • Virus or worm
  • Spyware

A user may be tricked into installing malicious software by opening an e-mail attachment, clicking on a deceptive web link, or downloading unauthorized “free” software such as games, screensavers, or other programs.
