Handling Information Safely
Physically Securing Information:
Electronic and physical security go hand-in-hand. For example, even though you take precautions to protect your workstation, leaving your office door unlocked provides easy access for a would-be thief to quickly remove your computer equipment containing private/non-public information.
Do NOT leave private printed information lying unprotected and in plain view.
- DO keep your desk area clear of private printed information.
- DO promptly retrieve printouts from printers.
- DO cross-shred sensitive documents in a timely manner. DO NOT use a strip-cut shredder.
- DO lock office doors, bins, office drawers and filing cabinets when away.
Do NOT leave local portable devices (i.e. laptop computers, flash drives, etc.) unattended.
- DO use laptop security locks.
- DO lock office doors.
- DO store smaller devices in locked cabinets or office drawers.
Do NOT leave your software applications accessible for use while your computer is unattended Remember, YOU are responsible for any activity that occurs under your log-on ID.
- DO use your workstation’s time-out features.
- DO use a password-protected screen saver with a timeout option.
- DO close your applications and log out of your computer at the end of each day.
Do NOT leave your monitor in plain view.
- DO turn it away from walkways and visitor seating. If this is not possible, order a privacy screen through your department manager.
