Handling Information Safely
Best Practices for Accessing Banner and other UNM Systems Remotely
Do not access Banner or any other UNM information system that you need to enter credentials on, from publicly available computers like those found in coffee shops or public libraries. Publicly accessible computers are not secure. These computers may contain Trojan horses, malware or keystroke-capturing software that records your keystrokes and compromises your password, providing unauthorized access to your own sensitive information, or to the sensitive information of others. However, you may safely access Banner and many other UNM systems from your home computer or laptop provided:
- Your computer meets UNM IT standards (see previous screen).
- you create separate password-protected workstation accounts if your home computer is shared with members of your household.
Even though Banner and Canvas are on encrypted websites, connecting to those sites from untrusted or unsecured networks, whether wired or wireless, may still provide opportunity for unauthorized access. Never click to accept untrusted secure site certificates for UNM services -- always report such errors at Help.UNM.
