Protecting Student Privacy
Here are some Best Practices for Handling Student Information:
Stay aware of what you're sharing
- Don’t provide anyone with lists of students enrolled in your classes for any purpose.
- Do pass along information about jobs, research, and scholarships to students (if applicable); let the students contact the company or foundation.
- Don’t discuss the progress of any student with anyone other than the student (including parents and spouses) without the consent of the student.
- Do remind colleagues and others that students have easy access to unofficial transcripts through the Web and can bring/send that information.
- Don’t provide anyone with student schedule information or help anyone other than University employees with a legitimate business purpose find a student on campus.
- Do refer people to the Dean of Students’ Office or Campus Police or equivalent Branch Department.
